What Does It Mean to Work With a Non-Diet Dietitian?

When you book your first appointment with a dietitian, what do you picture?

For a lot of people, it is a meal plan handed over on day one. A rigid list of foods to eat and foods to avoid. Perhaps you picture a dietitian like a walking nutrition encyclopedia, rattling off numbers about calories, protein, and carbs like the whole thing is one big math equation.

Honestly? That picture can feel pretty intimidating. And if that is part of what has kept you from reaching out, I want to send you the biggest hug and let you know that our work together can look so different. In fact, working with a non-diet dietitian often looks really different from what you might expect.

After years in practice here in Alberta (and supporting clients virtually across AB and BC!), I have noticed there is a LOT of confusion about what “non-diet” actually means. So let’s clear it up together.

So what does “non-diet” actually mean?

First and foremost, being a non-diet dietitian means I care about nutrition as a tool for your health and wellbeing. Not as a way to stay rigid or restrictive in order to control the shape or size of your body. I view nutrition first and foremost as a tool for self-care, rather than a weapon of self-control. If you want to read more about nutrition philosophy, you can check it out here (link to about page).

Here is what it does not mean. Non-diet does not make me anti the humans who have dieted. I am not against you if you have been on diets before. And if you are on a diet right now and you are curious about working with a dietitian, you are still welcome here! This is a space where your history is met with compassion, not judgment. We live in a world that constantly tells us smaller is better, and bombards us with so much information about food and nutrition. It can be so hard to figure out a path forward that is right for your body, and that’s where a non-diet dietitian can be a powerful ally in your nutrition journey.

What non-diet nutrition does mean is that I do a lot more work to explore your relationship with food. The factors that shape your access to food. How you feel about your food choices, and the motivations underneath them. It goes so much deeper than a surface-level calorie prescription or macro-counting advice.

What you can expect when you work with a non-diet dietitian

A focus on your relationship with food, not the scale.

Our work together centres on your behaviours and habits around food, not the number on the scale. We know that the scale, and tools like BMI, are not accurate predictors of your health. (I unpacked the why over HERE.)

Now, sometimes the nutrition changes we make together might lead to changes in your body. But shifting your weight, shape, or size is not the main goal of our work. In fact, the scale can become a distraction. It can actually pull you away from the very eating behaviours that help you feel good, because eating for weight loss and eating for genuine health and flourishing are often not the same thing.

Lots of listening, and lots of open-ended questions.

Expect to be heard. I want to know about YOUR experience, because I believe you are the expert on your body, your lifestyle, and what does and does not work for you. I bring evidence, insight, and plenty of ideas to the table. But I want to understand you, the whole, unique person in front of me, before I offer any of it. You will not find one-size-fits-all approaches here.

A big toolbox.

Non-diet dietitians are trained in a whole range of therapeutic approaches. Motivational interviewing. Cognitive behavioural therapy. Mindfulness. Intuitive Eating. All of it alongside medical nutrition therapy and a weight-inclusive, Health at Every Size informed lens. Think of it as a big toolbox of nutrition, behavioural, and therapeutic support. Together, we choose the tools that fit you and where you are in your journey.

Minimally to non-restrictive support, for all kinds of concerns.

Many people do not realize that non-diet dietitians support so much more than disordered eating and eating disorder recovery. In my practice, I also walk alongside clients navigating a variety of health concerns from a flexible, non-diet approach. Some of the conditions I commonly work with include:

  • IBS and functional gut disorders
  • General digestive health concerns, including constipation and bloating
  • PCOS/PMOS
  • Endometriosis
  • Perimenopause
  • Iron Deficiency/Anemia
  • Eating well to support your menstrual cycle
  • or simply using nutrition to care for yourself, support your mood, and improve your sleep!

And through all of it, I aim to provide compassionate, client-centred care for all bodies, helping you redefine health on your terms and chart your path to food freedom.

Curiosity and compassion, not judgment.

So much of challenging diet culture is challenging that black-and-white thinking. The idea that food is either good or bad, right or wrong. We are not aiming for perfect eating after a session or two. We are human! Sometimes we eat in ways that do not feel great, and that is part of being alive – living and learning!

Learning to meet those moments with curiosity instead of shame, asking what they have to teach us rather than heaping on the guilt is a huge part of working with a non-diet dietitian. If you have ever felt judged for your food choices, by a past clinician, a friend, or a family member, you should feel safe bringing that here. We will get curious together, gently, so you can understand what happened and learn from it.

And yes, we will still talk about nutrition.

I am a non-diet dietitian, but at the end of the day, I am still a dietitian! I spent years studying food because I truly believe nutrition has the power to improve and change our lives.

Depending on where you are and what you need, we might lean more or less into the nutrition side of things. And fair warning, it might look different from what fills your Instagram or TikTok feed. Foundational nutrition is a lot less flashy. It does not grab the headlines. But supporting you to eat enough throughout the day, to nourish your body with regular meals and snacks, and to offer more targeted support for specific medical concerns when you need it, that is nutrition therapy doing its quiet, powerful work.
