Simple carbs are not “bad carbs” 🙅🏼‍♀️
Simple carbohydrates (like my @uncrustables, which contain mostly simple carbs and some protein) provide an easily digestible, fast source of energy for the body. They’re great as part of a pre-workout snack, like I’m using here ~1 hour before I head out for my long run!
Food is fuel, and rather than using good/bad language, the better questions to ask yourself could be “how long do I want this meal/snack to last me? Which types of carbohydrates will help me achieve that?”

Here’s why you shouldn’t avoid processed foods 👇🏼
Did you know that many foods are “processed foods” and many of these foods can be helpful tools when it comes to building nutritious meals that provide us with staying power?! These foods often fall on a spectrum from minimally processed to ultra processed, and many foods along this spectrum serve a beautiful purpose in making healthy eating more convenient and achievable!
Foods like canned vegetables, frozen fruits, canned beans, and pre-cooked grains all help to reduce the amount of time and energy it takes to build a nutritious meal.

Which likely brings up all kinds of emotions for you. Navigating 2020 has resulted in an increased baseline of stress and anxiety, and the holidays may amplify that for you. ⁠⠀

So if you're feeling anxious, first just notice it. Then ask yourself what you need at this moment - how can you show yourself some self-care?⁠⠀

This is by no means an exhaustive list, but a few ideas I have to offer: ⁠⠀

🛁 A Hot Shower (or a hot bath). Hit pause. Lather up. Take a break.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
💤 Prioritize Sleep. Late-night scrolling through Tik Tok likely isn't helping you manage your anxiety throughout the day...speaking from personal experience 😉⁠⠀
⁠⠀
💃🏼 Shake it Out. T Swift was on to something here. Take 2 minutes, or 5 minutes, or 10 minutes and give yourself time to be silly and MOVE. You can't go wrong with a power song!
⁠⠀
💆🏼‍♀️ Connect to your breath. Put your feet on the ground and imagine roots growing out of the soles of your feet down into the ground. Breathe into it. Get grounded. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
☎️ Reach out for help. Talk to someone you trust - a family member, friend, counsellor or therapist. Unpacking anxious thoughts in a safe space can be very supportive. ⁠⠀

When you're cooking or preparing a meal for yourself, do you take a moment to add some ✨finishing touches✨?⁠⠀
⁠⠀
If you're like me and are often cooking for one, preparing meal after meal can get pretty monotonous and it's easy to view food as purely fuel. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Throw it on a plate. Eat it. Move on.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
And while food does provide us with energy, and our bodies need food regularly throughout the day, the experience of eating can also bring us so much more. Taking a few moments to create something more special (even if it's still dining for one!) can be a small way to show ourselves a little kindness.⁠⠀
⁠⠀
My challenge to you this week: take a regular 'ole meal - whether that's a work lunch, quick dinner, or a weekday breakfast - and put a little more focus on the meal presentation and setting than you might normally. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Maybe it's a drizzle of sauce for garnish. Or a dash of cinnamon on your latte. Or candles and soft music while you eat your weeknight stir fry. ⁠⠀
⁠⠀
Take care of yourself. Make every day feel special ✨and notice if anything changes with your experience of that food/meal.⁠⠀

I’ve been having a lot of these conversations with clients lately, so I thought it would be timely to create something to share with all of you - I’m thinking it may benefit you too 😉.
While holiday gatherings may look a little different this year, I have no doubt diet culture will still find its way in through the back door (or the front door…depending on the people you’re with!).
Above all else, I want you to remember that you have choice in these conversations. And while all I want for Christmas is a world where we don’t comment on other people’s plates or bodies, we’re not there (yet). You get to control your 50% of the conversation, and how/if you respond will depend on many things, including:
🤔 How you’re feeling that day - are you feeling grounded and ready to engage? Or are you a little more fragile and need to consider firmer boundaries to help you get through conversations?
🤔 Your capacity to deal with difficult conversations - not everyone has done the work that you’re doing to heal your relationship wth food and your body, and not everyone responds to pushback or feedback in the most ✨gracious✨ way. Are you feeling confident in advocating for yourself?
🤔 Who you’re talking to - your response may vary depending on who you’re talking to, and how comfortable you are with that person. Again, you get to choose!
